CSS is out of sample

I can tell you how a time series will behave next quarter. I could not, until recently, tell you why a div refused to sit in the middle of another div.

So I built this website, partly to have somewhere to put my notes and partly to find out what the frontend people have been doing all this time.

What transferred

More than I expected. A React component is a function: inputs go in, a description of the UI comes out. That's a familiar shape if you've spent years writing data transformations.

python
def card(title: str, body: str) -> str:
    return f"<article><h2>{title}</h2><p>{body}</p></article>"

Swap the f-string for JSX and you have most of the idea.

What didn't

Layout. In a pipeline, a bad join fails loudly.

In CSS, a bad assumption fails quietly, and only on someone else's phone.

Learnings

A forecast without uncertainty is just an opinion

Why a point estimate on its own is rarely the answer anyone actually needs.
